Yesterday, in the final of the Latvian Cup at Skonto Stadium, we won the Riga derby against RFS in a penalty series, winning the cup trophy for the second time in the club’s history.
We won the Latvian Cup for the first time in 2018, when we defeated the “Ventspils” team. After that, we have won the Latvian Highest league three times.
Both teams played very carefully in the first half of the game and were more defensive. We had a little more dangerous attacks. Overall there were no really good goal scoring chances. In the 43rd minute, Douglas Aurelio played great on the left side. The midfielder received a pass from Miloš Jojič and hit the goal into the near corner. A little later, Aurelio made one more dangerous shot. After the first half we were in the lead with 1:0.
In the early part of the second half, we controlled the ball more, but we lacked a good finishing shot. In the second part of the half, the RFS team was better. We spent a lot of time on our side of the field, and already in the additional time the referee awarded a penalty kick. It was made by Jānis Ikaunieks, and match went to extra time (1:1).
In extra time, the opponents put a lot of pressure on our goal, but we survived together. In the penalty series, we made five great penalties (El Bashir Ngom, Glodī Ngonda, Eduards Daškēvičs, Petar Bosančič and Antonī Contreras), but Petar Mareš’ shot was saved by our goalkeeper Rihards Matrevics.
The next game is on October 29 at the Skonto Stadium against “Super Nova”. The kick-off at 15:00.
